Back in 1997 we had an idea to start something we decided to call “social networking”… You may have heard of it!

Cornwall Social Group currently operates all across Cornwall, with a fabulous programme of events to suit a wide range of tastes and pockets, all professionally run by our dedicated team of expert organisers. We try to offer plenty in all parts of Cornwall, with some events in the south west of Cornwall, some in central Cornwall around Truro, Newquay and St Austell, some in north Cornwall around Bodmin, Bude, and Launceston, and some in south east Cornwall around Looe, Liskeard, Saltash, and Torpoint. Plus, once you become a Social Group member in Cornwall, you are also welcome to take part in Social Group Events in Devon too! Members in the western side of Cornwall should find enough in the western side of Cornwall, but members in the eastern side often enjoy taking part in events in Plymouth and Tavistock. There should be plenty on offer to everyone! Plus, you can also take part in our weekend breaks and holidays in the UK and around the world!

In 1997 Andrew Haglington invented social networking! These days, when you hear people talking about anything “social”, that’s all down to our managing director. Andrew Haglington was the first to think up and use the terms “social group”, “social event”, “social networking”, and “social media” in the modern sense! Devon Social Group was the first to start all of this, soon joined by Cornwall Social Group, Somerset Social Group, Bristol Social Group, and Social Group Holidays! The whole organisation is now under the umbrella of THE SOCIAL GROUP.
In the early days, we were just an informal ‘group of friends’, but things began to grow rapidly and our ideas about social networking soon spread around the planet, leading on to what happened in the USA and changing the entire civilisation. Social Group Enterprises Ltd. was set up as a “social enterprise” in March 2003 to run The Social Group in a professional capacity.
Our aims are to enable people to enjoy a better social life, and at the same time generate enough income to pay for the office, staff, etc. Over the years, the hard work of “social entrepreneurs” Andrew Haglington and Cathy Haglington has helped thousands of people to make friends and enjoy a better quality of life! The Social Group has changed the world!
Thank you to everyone who over the years has supported our efforts! You are all in our thoughts, and as many of you as possible will get a mention in the behind the scenes book we are writing, which has a working title of “THE MAN WHO INVENTED SOCIAL NETWORKING – THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL GROUP”.

This book will tell the true story of Andrew Haglington and how he started modern-style social networking here in South West England, in the 1990′s, detailing how it has all developed over the years and gone on to become a global phenomena – with lots of dramatic and funny tales of what really went on behind the scenes, including all the heart ache and difficulties, and the years of hard work and dedication, and overcoming the odds, that went into making The Social Group a success that did so much good for so many.

For new members, organisers Andrew & Cathy can offer a free ‘MEET & GREET’ (subject to availability) before the start of the first event. Remember, you can see what we look like and can chat on the telephone. So when you first start, you are not going to be going out by yourself – you are going to be going out with two people you already know. That’s two friends to start with! From there, we’ll then introduce you to more people! We take a lot of pride in the personal service we offer and this makes it much less daunting and very easy to get started.
